Denmark’s PM heads to Greenland amid US interest

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will travel to Greenland amid threats by the US president to seize the island, her office’s press office said on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the prime minister’s visit will last April 2-4. Frederiksen said she looked forward to further “close and trusting” co-operation between the kingdom and the island. The politician emphasised that it was important for her to visit Greenland “as soon as possible” and to welcome the island’s new head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

“I have the deepest respect for how the Greenlandic people and Greenlandic politicians handling the great pressure on Greenland,” Frederiksen said.

She added that what is happening requires unity of political forces and co-operation on a respectful and equal basis.

This week, US President Donald Trump pledged to protect Greenland from “Russian aggression” and “Chinese expansion.” A video with such statements was published by the head of the White House against the backdrop of US Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to the island.

J.D. Vance had previously stated that Washington intends to expand its military presence in the Greenland region in the future, as Russia and China are allegedly already doing so. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted Trump’s seriousness about the island, but said that Greenland’s ownership concerns only Denmark and the United States.
