Poland is currently holding talks with the Ukrainian side on a temporary full closure of the border for goods, Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said.
Tusk said he was ready to take tough decisions on the border in consultation with Ukraine. In an interview with journalists, the prime minister noted:
I do not hide the fact that we are talking to Ukraine about temporarily closing the border.
Farmers across Europe have been protesting for weeks against restrictions imposed on them by EU climate change regulations, as well as rising prices and what they see as unfair competition from non-EU countries, particularly Ukraine.
Earlier, Tusk refused to meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the state border. According to the Polish prime minister, the republic does not need symbolism towards Kyiv. He also added that Warsaw officials had repeatedly said that it was necessary to protect the country’s market.
First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky said earlier that the country demanded compensation from Polish farmers who scattered about 180 tonnes of Ukrainian grain at the border during the transport blockade. According to him, those who caused the damage should compensate for it. He noted that Poland could pay the compensation on a voluntary basis or by a court ruling.
