Dutch Party for Freedom quits government coalition

The leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) Geert Wilders announced on Tuesday that he was withdrawing his political force from the ruling coalition.

Wilders said he had taken this step because his coalition partners did not agree with his plan to curb migration.

“The PVV is leaving the coalition,” he wrote on his X account.

The leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) Dilan YeÅŸilgöz-Zegerius, has already responded to this statement. On her X account, she wrote that Wilders “is choosing his own ego and his own interests.”

“I am puzzled. He is rejecting an opportunity for right-wing politics. This is extremely irresponsible,” she added.

Wilders had previously threatened to leave the government if the coalition did not agree to his proposals to curb migration by closing the borders to asylum seekers, temporarily suspending family reunification and returning asylum seekers to Syria.

Monday’s meeting ended without consensus when Wilders’ three coalition partners refused to support his 10-point anti-immigration plan.

Migration is a pressing issue in the Netherlands and dominated the last election campaign in autumn 2023, which led to the fall of former Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s government.
