More than 200 people were arrested on New Year’s Eve during riots across the country in which dozens of police officers were injured, Dutch police said.
Police officers in several cities were attacked with fireworks and stones, resulting in serious incidents and “unacceptable” violence on the night, a police spokesman told broadcaster NOS.
More than 100 cars and other vehicles were set on fire and riot police squads were deployed in Amsterdam, The Hague and other cities to disperse violent crowds, Rotterdam police said.
Across the country, riot police also helped fire brigades that were attacked with fireworks as they tried to put out multiple fires.
Police said a 19-year-old in the city of Haarlem died from injuries sustained in a fireworks incident shortly before midnight yesterday.
