Earthquake in Tibet near Mount Everest kills at least 53

President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China has said that maximum efforts should be made to rescue and assist people in the Tibet Autonomous Region, where a strong earthquake struck on Tuesday, Chinese media reported.

The Chinese leader said:

“Efforts should be made to search and rescue people and provide medical care to the injured.”

According to Xi Jinping, China’s competent departments are obliged to eliminate risks that could lead to an emergency of a secondary nature. He also called for optimal conditions for evacuees and victims. The earthquake in southwest China has killed at least 53 people.

Seismologists have recorded 49 aftershocks following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Tibet.

The epicentre of the seismic phenomenon was 163 km from the town of Shigadze, the second most populous city in Tibet. The source lay at a depth of 10 kilometres. According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1, but the seismic centre of China estimated the magnitude at 6.8.

The strong tremors were felt by residents of Dingri County. Many buildings collapsed as a result. The tremors were also felt in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
