Egypt-EU relations to increase into a strategic partnership

An Egyptian-European summit is set to take place in Cairo on Sunday in a bid to take Egypt-EU relations to the level of a strategic partnership, the Egyptian presidency reported.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi will hold meetings with European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo, as well as the heads of government of Italy, Greece, Austria and the Greek Cypriot administration.

The meeting is being hosted to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations, the presidency said in a statement. The Egypt-EU summit will witness the strengthening of relations between the two sides to a “strategic and comprehensive partnership.”

The heads will also discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip, which is under a deadly Israeli offensive that has killed more than 31,600 people since the October Hamas attack. Egypt is also suffering economic hardship as a result of the Israel-Hamas war due to the decline in tourism and shipping through the Suez Canal.

Sunday’s summit comes amid reports that the EU will provide Egypt with a €7.4 billion funding package between 2024 and 2027 to stabilise the country’s economy.
