The Egyptian government has confirmed it will secure the electricity supply for the summer of 2025. The Ministries of Electricity and Petroleum are working together to meet the country’s growing energy demands. This plan aims to ensure reliability and avoid power shortages during peak months.
Focus on renewable energy
A key part of the strategy is to increase reliance on renewable energy sources. Egypt plans to expand its use of solar and wind energy. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced these plans at the inauguration of the Abydos 1 Solar Power Plant in Aswan’s Kom Ombo Desert. He said the Electricity Ministry has devised a plan to add an additional 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of power. This effort involves an investment of up to four billion dollars. The Ministry of Petroleum will also support these efforts.
Egypt is working with the private sector to implement these renewable energy projects. Many are set to be operational by next summer, contributing to Egypt’s growing energy capacity. This strategy will reduce Egypt’s reliance on imported petroleum products, promoting sustainability and energy independence.
Strengthening the national grid
The government has also secured funding to ensure sufficient fuel supplies for the national grid. This will help prevent load shedding and keep the grid stable. Additionally, the government aims to add 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy by the summer of 2025.
During the event, Madbouly also witnessed the signing of agreements for a 500-megawatt wind farm in the Gulf of Suez. The $600 million investment further strengthens Egypt’s renewable energy capacity. These efforts will reduce the nation’s dependency on fossil fuels, while ensuring a stable, sustainable power supply for the future.
