Eighteen injured during Ryanair evacuation at Palma airport

A fire alarm prompted the evacuation of a Ryanair flight bound for Manchester, injuring eighteen passengers. On Friday evening at Palma de Mallorca Airport, passengers jumped from the wings to leave the plane while it remained on the tarmac.

Six of those injured required treatment at nearby hospitals, Clinica Rotger and Palmaplanas Hospital. Ryanair reported that the injuries mostly consisted of minor ankle sprains caused during the hurried evacuation.

Emergency services arrived at the scene at 12:35 am after the alarm sounded. The airline later confirmed that the fire warning had been a false alarm.

Response and aftermath

Ryanair explained in a statement: “We halted take-off for the Palma to Manchester flight on 4 July due to a false fire warning. Passengers exited the plane using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal.

“A small number of passengers sustained minor injuries such as ankle sprains, and crew requested immediate medical assistance. To limit delays, we arranged a replacement aircraft, which departed Palma at 07:05 this morning.

“We apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.”

A spokesman from the regional emergency response centre told the Daily Mail: “We received a report of a fire on a plane at Palma airport at 00:36 am.

“We sent four ambulances, including two basic life support and two advanced life support units.

“Eighteen people received medical attention, and we took six of them to hospital. All injuries remained minor.

“Three patients went to Clinica Rotger, and three to Palmaplanas Hospital.”

LBC confirmed that the British consulate has not been contacted but stays ready to assist British nationals abroad at any time.
