A stabbing incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, has left eleven people injured, according to local authorities.
Police have arrested a suspect. Officials identified him as a Michigan resident who allegedly used a folding-style knife. The attack appears to have been random, said Sheriff Michael Shea.
Munson Medical Centre is treating all eleven victims. The hospital reported an unusually high volume of patients in its Emergency Department. Local media said three people are undergoing surgery.
Footage shared online shows several police and ambulance vehicles in the store’s car park.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. It described the event as a “multiple stabbing incident”.
The FBI is supporting the investigation. Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal officers are working with local authorities.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she had spoken with law enforcement. She expressed concern for the victims and the wider community.
Traverse City is located around 255 miles (410 kilometres) northwest of Detroit.
