England defeated Sweden in dramatic penalty shootout, advanced to semi-finals of 2025 Women’s Euro

The England women’s football team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 European Championship after a dramatic victory over Sweden in a penalty shootout in Zurich, Switzerland.

Sweden dominates the first half

The Swedish players opened the scoring in the second minute of the match with a goal from Kosovare Asllani, who took advantage of mistakes by the England defence. Stina Blackstenius then scored on a successful counterattack, giving Sweden a two-goal lead by the 25th minute.

Despite some dangerous moments in front of the Swedish goal, England struggled in defence, and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made several sharp saves before the break.

England’s revival in the second half

In the second half, England coach Sarina Wiegman brought on fresh legs in the 70th and 75th minutes, with Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly coming on.

This changed the course of the game: first, Lucy Bronze headed the ball into the Swedish goal after a cross from Kelly, and then Agyemang scored the second goal to level the score. England continued to attack but failed to score a third goal in regular time.

In extra time, the game became disjointed, with Swedish defender Nathalie Björn creating the most dangerous moment, but her shot was off target. The English also failed to convert several chances, including one from Alessia Russo.

In the penalty shootout, both teams missed shots, but England was luckier and advanced to the next round. Now, Italy will be their opponent in the semi-finals.

England’s path in the tournament

England lost 2-1 to France in their opening group stage match but bounced back with convincing wins over the Netherlands and Wales. Despite some defensive lapses, the team is showing character and finding the strength to fight until the final whistle.

For football fans and sports enthusiasts, this match is yet another example of the intense competition and drama that characterise major tournaments.
