Ethiopia plunged into darkness following nationwide power outage

Ethiopian authorities announced on Thursday that electricity was cut off in almost the entire country due to a system failure.

The state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power claimed electricity was “completely cut off” in all regions of the country except Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region in the north, and neighbouring areas at around 3:46 p.m. local time (12:46 GMT).

The statement read that the blackout occurred due to a “fault in our system.” Authorities called on citizens to stay patient while they work on resolving the problem and reconnecting to the national grid.

The utility company reported in a later statement that power was being restored to all parts of the country.
