EU allocates €175 million for Syria’s recovery after sanctions lifted

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it would allocate €175 million to support Syria’s economic recovery.

“Syria is at a critical juncture in its history, with a real opportunity to move from a past marked by conflict to a future based on peace, stability and hope. We remain firmly committed to supporting the Syrian people at this crucial stage, helping them rebuild their country, revive the economy, create jobs and lay the foundations for a stable, prosperous and inclusive future,” Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, said.

The EC communiqué refers to support for Syrian state institutions with the help of experts, including from other countries, including the Syrian diaspora. Assistance will be provided in areas such as energy, education, health and agriculture.

The EU’s plans for Syria also include promoting transitional justice, including the fight against impunity, supporting human rights and investigating cases of missing persons.

“In addition, the Commission is actively seeking to integrate Syria into several key initiatives with partner countries in the Mediterranean, including the Erasmus+ education programme and the upcoming New Pact for the Mediterranean, which aims to strengthen cooperation and interaction in the region,” the EC said.
