The UK and the EU have concluded an international plan to combat illegal migration, POLITICO reports.
Both sides will soon publish detailed information about the new agreement in the country, work on which will begin at least in autumn.
A UK government readout of a call between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said:
The leaders welcomed the successful conclusion of negotiations on a new working arrangement between UK agencies and Frontex, which should be formalised in the coming days, as part of wider cooperation between the UK and EU on tackling illegal migration.
The EU statement sounds almost exactly the same, but the EU talks about “suppressing” illegal migration rather than “fighting” it, suggesting that the agreed language has been changed.
Greater cooperation on irregular migration, where people cross borders without official permission, has been in the works for some time but has been hampered by the UK’s desire to secure a return agreement.
