European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit will face the current President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen after being elected on Saturday as the leading candidate of the Party of European Socialists (PES) for the 2024 EU elections during the party’s congress in Rome.
Speaking at the congress, Schmit stated that he wanted voters to know that the Social Democrats would “keep fighting” for all citizens and will honour their commitments and promises.
I am honoured to have been elected lead candidate of the PES family for the 2024 EU elections. Together, we are ready to build a more social, democratic and sustainable EU that works for all.
The conference was also attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The European Commission is represented by a president and 26 commissioners, with its president being elected for a 5-year term by the European Parliament after the European elections.
