The Council of the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to the enlargement process, calling it a geo-strategic investment in security and prosperity, according to bne IntelliNews.
The process moved forward with the outbreak of war in Ukraine in 2022. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine became candidates at that time, while existing candidates such as Albania advanced towards EU membership.
On 17 December, the General Affairs Council stressed the importance of fair and strict conditions, as well as the bloc’s ability to welcome new members.
Aspiring members need to step up their reform efforts, notably in the area of rule of law, in line with the merit-based nature of the accession process and with the assistance of the EU.
The Council also reaffirmed its commitment to the aspirations of the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova for EU membership, calling for the reforms necessary for admission. The authority praised Montenegro’s achievements in implementing reforms, while calling on Serbia and Kosovo to maintain de-escalation efforts.
The EU Council welcomed Albania’s progress, including recent efforts to negotiate on fundamental issues and external relations, calling for continued reforms needed for admission to the bloc.
