European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen intend to visit China to attend the China-EU summit and meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
“Premier Li Qiáng will co-host the 25th China-EU summit with the two presidents of the European Union,” the statement said. In addition, European leaders will meet with Xi Jinping on July 24.
The trip comes amid European sanctions against two Chinese banks. After that, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas that Beijing would respond to these actions.
In addition, the White House team led by US President Donald Trump is trying to get the European Union to take measures against China. These include the introduction of tariffs.
Earlier, media reported that US President Trump may visit China before the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit, which will be held in South Korea from October 30 to November 1, or meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the international meeting.
