European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced on Friday that the European Union is ready to conclude a trade agreement with the United States.
According to her, negotiations with President Donald Trump’s administration are actively underway, and the EU intends to bring the process to a concrete conclusion.
Von der Leyen noted that she had a constructive conversation with Trump at the G7 summit in Canada, during which the parties agreed to speed up the negotiation process.
“We agreed to work faster with a clear goal in mind: to reach an agreement by July 9,” she emphasised.
Von der Leyen added that the European Commission recently received a new draft document from the United States, which is currently being analysed.
“Our message today is clear: we are ready for an agreement,” von der Leyen said. However, she added that the EU does not rule out a less favourable scenario in which no agreement is reached. In this case, she said, Brussels is ready to act in the interests of the European economy.
“That is why we have consulted on possible rebalancing measures. All options remain on the table, and we will defend European interests if necessary,” the head of the European Commission stressed.
