The European Union (EU) will allocate funds for the construction of a defence line on the borders with Russia and the implementation of an “Iron Dome” project for air defence over Europe, one of the initiators of the ideas, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said after a summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
Tusk noted:
Poland eventually managed to “push through” this project [of a pan-European air defence system]. The point is for Europe, not individual nation states, to take responsibility for the safe skies above it.
Earlier, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia sent a letter to the EU calling for the construction of a defence line along the bloc’s border with Russia and Belarus. The document said the project, designed to protect the 27-nation bloc of 450 million people, would need financial support from all members of the union.
Poland this month also announced the establishment of a buffer zone on the border with Belarus from June 13, the relevant decree was signed by the republic’s Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak. The measure implies a temporary ban on staying in a certain area in the border area. The rule will be valid for 90 days.
