The European Union is ready to discuss the possibility of reforming the World Health Organisation (WHO) amid US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the country from the organisation, European Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrncirova said on Tuesday.
The EU is concerned about the new US president’s decision to withdraw from the international organisation, which coordinates health work within the UN system, the Commission spokeswoman added. She also told reporters:
“If we want to be resilient to global health threats, we need global co-operation. We hope the US administration will think this through before formally withdrawing.”
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the country from the World Health Organisation immediately after taking office on January 20.
The document notes that China has almost three times the population of the US, however, Beijing transfers 90 per cent less money to the WHO budget. According to Donald Trump, such an order of payment of contributions is unfair.
WHO representative Tarik Yasharevich expressed regret over Donald Trump’s decision and expressed hope that the US authorities would change their position.
