Euro zone inflation unexpectedly quickens to 2.5% in January

Consumer prices in the euro zone in January increased by 2.5% in annual terms, according to the report of the statistical office of the European Union, which presented preliminary data.

Inflation accelerated compared to December 2024, when it was 2.4%, and updated the maximum since July last year.

The consensus forecast of analysts, cited by Trading Economics, assumed that the rate of price growth would remain at the December level.

Consumer prices excluding the cost of food and energy (CPI Core index) increased by 2.7%, the same as a month earlier. Experts on average expected an increase of 2.6%.

According to preliminary data, the increase in the cost of services in the past month was 3.9% against 4% in December, the rise in prices for food, alcohol and tobacco products slowed to 2.3% from 2.6%. Industrial products in January rose in price by 0.5%, the same as in December, energy resources – by 1.8% (+0.1% a month earlier).

Consumer prices in the eurozone in January decreased by 0.3% compared to the previous month. In December, they increased by 0.4% in monthly terms. Final data on the dynamics of inflation in the euro zone for January will be released on February 24.
