European journalist killed in Lebanon, investigation continues

An Israeli tank killed a Reuters journalist and wounded six reporters in Lebanon in October by firing two shells in quick succession from Israeli territory as the journalists filmed cross-border shelling, a Reuters investigation showed.

The two strikes critically wounded Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah, 37, and Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer Christine Assi, 28, a kilometre from the Israeli border near the Lebanese village of Alma al-Shaab.

Reuters spoke to more than 30 government and security officials, military experts, forensic investigators, lawyers, medics and witnesses to piece together a detailed account of the incident. The news agency examined hours of video footage from eight media outlets in the area at the time and hundreds of photographs taken before and after the attack, including high-resolution satellite imagery.

As part of the investigation, Reuters also collected and obtained evidence from the scene, including shrapnel on the ground and in the Reuters vehicle, three bulletproof vests, a camera, a tripod and a large piece of metal
