Eurotunnel strike ends, Channel traffic restored

Normal rail services through the Channel Tunnel have resumed following a strike by French workers, The Guardian reports.

Eurostar passenger flights between London and Paris are running, albeit with relatively minor delays. Eurotunnel said its LeShuttle train carrying cars was also running on schedule in both directions with regular departures.

The strike by French Eurotunnel workers added to the disruption to UK rail services caused by Storm Pia, which felled trees on railways across the country. The storm was not strong enough to be named in the UK, but authorities in Denmark gave it that name.

Strikes were called suddenly on Thursday morning but ended in the evening after talks between the union and the company. The East Coast Main Line between London and Manchester was closed on Thursday due to bad weather.

On Friday morning, the Met Office lifted a severe weather warning for much of the UK, although disruption to rail services from Edinburgh to Inverness and north of Inverness was still expected on Friday. High winds caused by the remnants of the storm, which is moving eastwards towards Europe, resulted in cancellations of train services.

Train services in Birmingham and Norwich were also disrupted due to a fallen tree and flooding caused by the storm.

Friday is also expected to be the main day for Christmas road journeys. The RAC said this week that 3.2 million car journeys are expected on Friday to visit family and friends, but warned it could be a busy day as people will be sharing the roads with commuters and commercial vehicles ahead of the weekend. The busiest day is expected on Saturday and the RAC is advising travellers to hit the road as early as possible.
