EVs lead car sales in Denmark in Q1 of 2025

While car sales in Denmark remained relatively stable in the first quarter of 2025, increasing by 1.5 per cent year-on-year, sales of electric vehicles rose sharply, data from Mobility Denmark shows.

A total of 37,435 newly registered vehicles took to Danish roads in the first quarter, with 14,987 vehicles registered in March alone, down 11.2 per cent from March 2024.

“March saw a downward fluctuation in the car market, and although it is of course not something we are happy about, it is also not something that gives rise to major concern,” commented Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark. “We note that the sales level for the first quarter is stable compared to last year, and that Danish consumers still show interest in new cars.”

Electric vehicle sales

Electric vehicle sales totalled 24,537 units during the quarter, a 62% increase compared to the first three months of 2024, notes Mobility Denmark. In March alone, 9,855 new electric cars were sold, which is 39 % more than last year.

Electric cars now account for two-thirds (65.5 per cent) of all car sales in Denmark.

“Electric vehicles have played a significantly larger role in car sales in the first quarter,” Rørvig added. “The spread of electric cars is an important tool in reducing CO₂ emissions in Denmark, but with the current car taxation model, several of the most popular electric car models are set to become significantly more expensive from January.”

“If the development is to continue, it requires that good framework conditions are ensured from a political point of view, and right now there is a historically good opportunity to create a long-term model for car taxation that is both simpler and continues to make it attractive to choose an electric car.”
