Security scare at strategic hub
A drone carrying an explosive device and a detonator was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport, NATO officials have confirmed on Wednesday. The incident at the critical logistics hub triggered a major security response overnight, exposing potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain for military assistance to Ukraine.
The confirmation, relayed by a source within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to Germany’s DPA news agency, follows earlier reports of a suspicious object on the airfield. The revelation has heightened concerns over covert sabotage efforts targeting Western support for Kyiv.
Bomb disposal robot deployed
The alarm was raised after the unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted on the airfield, positioned close to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. German federal police swiftly deployed a specialist robot to neutralise the device, which was described as a small drone affixed with a package containing an explosive charge and a fuse.
While the immediate threat was contained, a manhunt for the drone’s operator proved futile. Authorities have so far been unable to locate the individual responsible for piloting the device onto the sensitive site.
