Six unions representing farmers and processors in the EU proposed limiting imports of agricultural products from Ukraine in their respective sectors.
The sectors involve sugar, cereals, oilseeds, poultry meat and eggs. They believe that the survival of European producers depends on this.
They put forward six proposals which they hope will be taken into account by the European Commission, Council and Parliament:
One of the requirements is the establishment of import thresholds for sensitive agricultural products. Therefore, any additional volume should only pass through the European Union. Next is to intensify international efforts to restore the flow of goods from Black Sea ports so that they once again become the main export channel for Ukrainian products.
Additional investment in logistics and infrastructure to facilitate the operation of solidarity routes, i.e. the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products through the European Union, and tighter border controls to ensure that imported products meet EU phytosanitary and zoohygienic standards.
Finally, establishing a system to ensure that Ukrainian products are delivered to their intended destination before they are imported into the European Union.
“We fear that if the mechanism with Ukraine is maintained in its current form, without adaptation, the survival of European Union producers in general, and especially in the cereals, oilseeds, poultry, eggs and sugar sectors, will be jeopardised, as will the continued support for Ukraine,” the six organisations stated.
