Father of Spanish football star Yamal stabbed in car park

Mounir Nasraoui, the father of 17-year-old Spanish football star Lamine Yamal was stabbed several times in a car park, according to Spanish media.

Nasraoui was reportedly attacked in the coastal town of Mataró north of Barcelona on Wednesday evening by a group of people. Earlier in the day, Nasraoui had an argument with a group of people he encountered while walking his dog, according to El Pais. Hours later, the same group approached him in a car park and stabbed him “multiple times.”

Catalan police confirmed that three people were arrested on Wednesday, while a fourth suspect was detained on Thursday morning.

Nasraoui was taken to a hospital in Barcelona in a serious condition, but his state is now assessed as stable. The attack reportedly took place near the Rocafonda neighbourhood where Yamal grew up.

The motives for the stabbing are unknown as of now. A report on sports website Relevo says Nasraoui will remain in hospital for two to three days under observation.

Lamine Yamal, the youngest player in Spain’s national team, shone at Euro 2024, where he was named Young Player of the Tournament. He assisted Nico Williams’ goal that helped Spain beat England 2-1 in the final in Berlin. Shortly after Spain took the trophy, fans lined the streets of Mataró, honouring their young star.
