FBI discovers top secret JFK assassination documents after Trump’s order to release files

The FBI has found about 2.4 thousand unclassified documents related to the case of the assassination of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy, the US media reported citing sources.

The materials are set out on 14 thousand pages, they were found during the inspection, launched after the relevant decree of the President Donald Trump. The White House was informed of the existence of these documents last Friday. Their content has not yet been disclosed.

In 1992, the US Congress passed an act that required the Kennedy assassination files to be transferred to the National Archives and Records Administration. It was understood that all documents would be declassified by 2017, but Trump in his first term as president, as well as his successor Joe Biden, extended the secrecy status for their study.

The archive now holds about 5 million pages of records, with more than 2,600 documents released in 2023.

The discovery of the new material is likely to raise questions about the government’s adherence to vetting and disclosure procedures. “This is colossal. It means the FBI is taking the case seriously,” expert Jefferson Morley, who has written several books on the JFK assassination, said. He has sued the US government, demanding that more documents be declassified.

Kennedy was shot dead on November 22, 1963 during a visit to Dallas, Texas. At the time of the assassination, the president was in a convertible with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Governor John Connally. Kennedy was shot in the head and neck and Connally was shot in the back, he survived.

Former Marine Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested on suspicion of murder. Three days later, he was shot by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby, who later died in prison. One of the documents declassified by the archive stated that Ruby may have had advance knowledge of an assassination attempt on JFK.

As the government has refused to declassify the documents for decades, many conspiracy theories have emerged. However, the remaining materials are unlikely to prove whether Oswald acted alone or “was part of a larger conspiracy.”
