Christian Dürr, leader of the FDP parliamentary group, has called for increased federal police to continue control at all German borders.
“Controls at Germany’s borders have proved very efficient in the struggle against illegal migration. The State Ministry of the Interior now must first and foremost technically equip the federal police so that we can consolidate border control,” Dürr said.
He explained that in case this measure is successful, it should go ahead. In addition, according to him, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supported strict controls on Germany’s borders in the future. He mentioned the controls have been in place for some time on the borders with Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland, as well as the controls on the border with France, which are in place during the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris.
He told the newspaper Saarbrücker Zeitung earlier that he regards labour migration as necessary and desirable for Berlin’s policy, but he wants to tackle illegal migration and continues to rely on border controls because the numbers have to come down.
“We mean to limit illegal migration, I have announced that. Their numbers must come down. However, far too many people come to us irregularly and say they are seeking protection from persecution but cannot give reasons for asylum and then they are refused,” he stated.
Temporary controls were in place at all German borders until Friday last week, but they have now extended until mid-December at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland and until mid-November at the German-Austrian border. The primary purpose is to crack down on illegal migration. Controls at the border between Germany and France will continue until 30 September.
