A fire at a hotel in a ski resort in northwestern Turkey killed at least 10 people overnight and injured 32 others, authorities said on Tuesday.
The dead were Turkish nationals, two of whom died after jumping into the water. Provincial governor Abdulaziz Aydın said the condition of 26 of the injured was assessed as moderate, while two were in serious condition. He also said the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained, but noted that it started on the floor where the restaurant is located. The hotel had 234 guests at the time of the fire, Aydın added.
The fire at the hotel has now been brought under control. Authorities have launched an investigation.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said 267 employees from various state institutions and organisations were involved in the fire’s extinguishment. He expressed regret over the loss of life and wished recovery to the injured.
The Kartalkaya ski resort, located on top of the Köroğlu Mountains, is a popular winter holiday destination. It is located about 40 kilometres from the city of Bolu and 270 kilometres from Istanbul.
