A UN mission arrived in Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday as the mass flight of ethnic Armenians from the region continues after a lightning operation by Azerbaijani forces last month, according to Azerbaijani media.
The mission, led by senior officials, visits the region for the first time in 30 years because Armenia has asked the World Court to force Azerbaijan out of all civilian facilities in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Already more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians have moved from the dangerous region to Armenia. The departure of the hungry and exhausted people was bloodied this week by an explosion at a fuel factory that killed at least 170 people. Dr Hans Henri P Kluge, regional director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, said in a statement.
We’ve activated our emergency systems and will be sending experts to the country across a range of disciplines including mental health, burns management, essential health services, and emergency coordination following a full assessment of the needs.
