Five people were killed and more injured when an intercity bus crashed on a motorway near the eastern German city of Leipzig on Wednesday, police said.
Police in the state of Saxony said on social media platform X:
Five people were fatally injured in the serious accident on the A9 motorway. There are numerous casualties.
The bus belonged to German travel company Flixbus and was travelling from Berlin to Zurich, Flixbus said in a statement. Local media reported that five people were killed after the Flixbus bus veered to the right off the busy A9 motorway linking Berlin to Munich and ended up on its side.
The road towards Munich was closed, police said, and photos showed ambulances and helicopters arriving at the scene. Flixbus company said in a statement:
The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known.
The company added that it is working with emergency services to find out what happened. There were 53 passengers and two drivers on board the bus, which was travelling from Berlin to Zurich.
