New riots broke out in the centre of Amsterdam on Monday evening after a ban on mass protests was imposed. Police are trying to control the situation, a helicopter and additional riot squads have been deployed.
A group of people clashed with law enforcement officers. No injuries have been reported yet. Demonstrators set fire to a tram, the fire has already been extinguished. Protesters are damaging cars and shop windows.
According to Dutch media, riots were called for earlier on social media. One eyewitness reported many “young people on scooters.”
Meanwhile, police reported five new arrests in the investigation into the earlier riots, which broke out last Thursday. All five suspects are men aged between 18 and 37. The Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has promised to bring all those responsible for the violence to justice. According to police, at least five people were hospitalised in that incident and between 25 and 35 others were injured.
On November 7, dozens of masked men carrying Palestinian flags attacked Israeli fans in Amsterdam after a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam. As a result of the riots, five fans were hospitalised and 30 others were injured. Police arrested more than 60 people were arrested.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the incident with Dick Schoof. He said he “takes extremely seriously the planned anti-Semitic attack on Israeli citizens” and asked for increased security measures for the Jewish community in the Netherlands.
