Floods worsen in Malaysia, thousands evacuated

Thousands of people have been evacuated to temporary relief centres as floods hit two Malaysian states, state media reported on Thursday.

The number of people evacuated to relief centres in Sarawak and Sabah rose to 4,000 as flooding intensified, Bernama News reported.

Some 2,981 people have been displaced in Sarawak and 1,019 in Sabah, all of whom are housed in relief camps across the states.

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat, Serian town had the most displaced, with 1,406 people from 453 families taking shelter in relief camps.

Meanwhile, in Miri town, a landslide displaced more than 100 people. Kota Marudu district in Sabah remains the worst affected with 673 displaced people.
