Former UK Prime Minister creating new movement ahead of election

Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced Tuesday the formation of a new movement, the Popular Conservatism, along with former Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Truss, the UK leader with the shortest term in office (49 days), stated that it was time to listen to voters and return to traditional Conservative values on issues such as immigration, climate change and state regulation.

The fundamental issue is that for years and years and years… Conservatives have not taken on the left-wing extremists.

The former prime minister remains a hugely unpopular politician with the British public, who face a cost of living crisis for which economists argue her budget is partly responsible.

The Conservative Party, which has been in power for almost 14 years, is currently trailing the opposition Labour Party in the polls ahead of the general election later this year. The formation of a new conservative group within the party is another obstacle for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to unite his party ahead of the election.

Last month, MP Simon Clark called for Sunak to resign before the election, and the new movement denied it was involved in calls for Sunak to be replaced as party leader.
