More than 122,000 people have been displaced from their homes by severe flooding caused by persistent rains in Malaysia’s northern states, emergency officials said on Saturday.
The death toll still stands at four in Kelantan, Terengganu and Sarawak. The number of flood victims in Terengganu rose by more than 10,000 within 12 hours, according to state news agency Bernama.
Meanwhile, according to InfoBanjir portal, water level readings at 20 stations in all districts indicate dangerous levels. A total of 467 temporary evacuation centres have been set up for those affected.
Malaysia’s east coast is hit by the annual monsoon season from October to March, forcing thousands of people from their homes.
The Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a red alert due to prolonged heavy rains, indicating dangerous levels of downpours in the states of Kelantan, Pahang and Trengganu. The rains are expected to continue until next week.
