Fourth parliamentary elections begin in Syria

The People’s Assembly elections in Syria marked the fourth parliamentary elections held since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011, according to Syrian media.

Parliamentary voting began on Monday, 15 July.

1,516 candidates are vying for 250 seats in the People’s Assembly. Candidate lists were prepared and sent to all 8,151 polling stations in the Syrian provinces.

President Bashar Al-Assad signed a decree specifying the number of People’s Assembly members for the labour and peasant workers and other sectors in each constituency across all the country’s governorates.

The president’s Baath Party won 166 seats in the 2020 elections, almost two-thirds of its members, in addition to 17 members of allied parties. Another 67 seats went to independent candidates.
