As a fragile memorandum of understanding halts active hostilities, Iranian media report that Islamabad has emerged as the frontrunner to host the next round of high-stakes negotiations between Tehran and Washington, despite a stark warning from Turkey that Israel may attempt to sabotage the process.
The next round of negotiations between Iran and the United States is likely to take place in Islamabad, with the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock serving as a secondary option, according to Iranian media reports.
While both locations are under consideration, sources suggest delegations will almost certainly opt for the Pakistani capital. The agenda is expected to be sweeping, covering Iran’s nuclear programme, the release of frozen Iranian assets held abroad, and the lifting of international sanctions. Discussions will also seek to ensure lasting stability in the Strait of Hormuz and address adherence to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
However, a shadow looms over the diplomatic effort. Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, has cautioned that Israel could try to derail the engagement. “We view the talks between Iran and the US as vital,” Fidan told Haber Global. “Nevertheless, we must not forget that Israel may attempt to sabotage this process at the earliest opportunity. All parties must remain vigilant.”
This fresh diplomatic push follows a critical breakthrough in the early hours of June 18, when US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian remotely signed a memorandum of understanding, which took effect immediately. The document formally ended the military conflict that erupted on February 28 and mandated the reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
