France hit by protest as security forces fire teargas at taxi strike

Taxi drivers in France are continuing to disrupt traffic in a number of cities for the third day in a row, protesting against planned changes to medical transport tariffs, Le Figaro reports.

Demonstrations are continuing in several French cities. Authorities in a number of departments have warned of expected traffic disruptions. Traffic jams caused by the protests have also formed on the border with Switzerland.

In Paris, about 100 taxi drivers took to the streets, blocking traffic on Boulevard Raspail near the Ministry of Transport.

On Monday, French police fired teargas during a taxi drivers’ demonstration to prevent protesters from approaching the government residence at the Matignon Palace in Paris.

The protests began over the French government’s plans to cut spending on medical transport. As part of the changes for taxi drivers, a single medical transport fare is to be approved across the country. Drivers believe that this measure will lead to lower fares.

In December, taxi drivers in France staged protests against the reduction in medical transport fares.

Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, leader of the party Debout la France (France Arise), called for people to join the protests on X:

“Macron has certainly not forgotten his ties to Uber! Those who dream of a government that will fight criminals, not taxi drivers, JOIN US!”
