France to ask Russia for a ceasefire during Olympics, Macron says

French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview from Paris that France will offer Russia a ceasefire for the duration of the Paris Olympics.

In a published interview with the French president by a Ukrainian journalist on her YouTube channel on Saturday, the material dealt with the issue of a ceasefire during the Olympics:

“The demand for a ceasefire during the Olympics. They must do this. That is what has always happened,” the interviewer said, speaking through an interpreter.

“It will be requested,” Macron says in French before a voiceover interpretation gives his response in Ukrainian as “Yes, we will ask for it.”

The issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine was also touched upon:

“On the one hand, we need to give Ukraine everything it needs to strengthen its defence capabilities, and on the other hand, we need to help de-escalate. We need to reach a sustainable, lasting and just peace. So if he suddenly wanted to propose something, I would listen to the meaning of his proposals. But then, of course, I have to say that the only negotiations are those that the heads of the two states are willing to hold,” the French President stressed.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place between 26 July and 11 August. Russian athletes will compete at the Olympics, although they will be considered “neutral” since Russia is officially banned from participating in such international competitions.
