French judge Mattias Guyomar was elected president of the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday.
Judge Guyomar, who has been working at the court since 2020 and has been a section president since 2024, will replace Slovenian judge Marko Bošnjak on May 30, 2025.
Guyomar is the third French judge to hold the position of president of the court and the first since 2011. He was born in July 1968, shortly after the first French president of the court, Judge René Cassin, completed his term of office.
French judge Jean-Paul Costa served as president of the court from 2007 to 2011.
Since the court was founded, its presidents have been British judges three times, who are now on a par with their French colleagues.
