French MEP demands US “give back Statue of Liberty”

French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, speaking at his party’s Place publique convention on Sunday, demanded that the US return the Statue of Liberty.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but you seem to despise it,” the MEP said.

The Statue of Liberty is located in the United States on Liberty Island, southwest of Manhattan.

The Statue of Liberty was created by Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi and given to the United States as a gift from the French people to the Americans to commemorate the alliance between the two nations during the US War of Independence. The statue became a national monument on October 15, 1924.

The idea for the monument was proposed by Edouard René Lefebvre de Laboulaye, who was inspired by the abolitionists’ victory in the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

Earlier, the head of the French political force Patriots Florian Philippot expressed his displeasure with the position of Raphael Glucksmann, who in his speech to his colleagues said that it was necessary to increase support for Ukraine and increase arms supplies. Philippot expressed his indignation about this and suggested that Glucksmann himself go to Ukraine and take part in combat operations.
