The French military demanded to put under parliamentary control the actions of the president and the government in Ukraine, the head of the association of veterans Place d’Armes Jean-Pierre Fabre-Bernadac told Sud Radio.
The corresponding appeal was signed by more than nine thousand retired generals, admirals and officers. According to Fabre-Bernadac, the appeal was prepared by a group of military officers, including 26 generals.
“Place d’Armes validated and supported their appeal by posting it on its website, where there is an opportunity to sign it,” Fabre-Bernadac told Sud Radio.
He specified that in the two days that have passed since its publication, the letter has been supported by more than nine thousand people. On the website one can see all the names and signatories of the military.
In their appeal they ask after the disclosure of the data to hold a vote in both houses of parliament on the further stay of the French military on the territory of Ukraine.
The authors of the message also insist that the French authorities take responsibility and publicise the truth. In their opinion, various information is being disseminated in the information space, the authenticity of which cannot be verified. The initiators called the presence of French troops in Ukraine “interference.”
French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly announced the possibility of stationing a foreign military contingent in Ukraine. In late March, following the results of the last summit of the “coalition of the willing” he said that some of its representatives are planning to send to Ukraine “deterrent forces.”
Earlier, AFP quoted European officials as saying that only six countries in the “coalition” were ready to send troops to the conflict zone – the UK, France and the Baltic states.
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, leader of the party Debout la France (France Arise), wrote on X:
“Well done to the dozens of French army officers who launched a petition demanding an urgent parliamentary debate on the commitment to Ukraine. Faced with the lack of courage of MPs who do not oppose Macron’s military madness, let us rejoice that the army has reminded them of their republican duty. Back in March 2024, I was surprised to find myself the only patriotic MP to vote against a resolution in favour of Ukraine!”
