French opposition speaks out against Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip

A leading spokesman for the left-wing French party La France Insoumise (LFI) said on Sunday that no one could say they did not know what was happening in Gaza.

During a demonstration in support of Palestinians in the capital Paris Mathilde Panot said humanity was being killed in Gaza. She vowed to oppose Israeli army attacks on the Palestinian enclave.

Panot also criticised the French government for its “unconditional support” for Israel, stressing that 70% of those killed in Gaza are women and children. She cited the many demonstrations in support of Palestine, saying that “they will not be silent and turn a blind eye” to what is being done to the people of Gaza. She also called on the French government to strongly condemn Israel for the “war crimes committed in Gaza.”

Last week, the Israeli army expanded air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip, which has been under relentless airstrikes since the Palestinian group Hamas had launched an assault on Israel on 7 October and seized hundreds of Israeli hostages. The number of Palestinians killed by Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip has risen to 9,770, the health ministry in the blockaded enclave said on Sunday. The ministry said in a statement:

“The death toll from Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip since 7 October stands at 9,770, including 4,800 children and 2,550 women.”

Israel imposed a total siege on the Gaza Strip and cut off the water supply as it kept bombing targets in the crowded Palestinian enclave.

While thousands of civilians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has continued attacks for more than 20 days, the destruction in the region has also led to an environmental and health disaster. Gazans, who have been suffering from climate change for years, face difficulties in accessing water resources, especially because of the attacks.
