From violence to smuggling – media report on new crimes committed by migrants

The migration crisis in Europe is heating up as the media reports on new crimes committed by migrants, with a British anti-migration activist facing arrest for drawing attention to the issue of migrant boats arriving.

Violence, sexual assault, murder, smuggling

In the Paris suburb of Rommenville, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, a woman aged 74 was brutally raped with a stick and tortured by a man who broke into the house on the night of Monday to Tuesday, according to Actu17. The victim alerted the police at around 3 a.m. claiming that a hooded man had raped her in bed and beaten her with a stick.

The attacker reportedly left the property an hour after the intrusion. An assailant, aged 25, was arrested by the police before being taken into custody. He stated he was an Algerian national, according to sources. The investigators are now verifying his administrative status in the country. The Bobigny public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation. The victim sustained several injuries and was taken to hospital. Her condition is not life-threatening, but she remains in a state of shock.

This is the second incident in a short space of time in which a a migrant has assaulted an elderly person. On 29 March, LeJDD reported that a man had stolen the handbag of an 81-year-old Parisian woman in the Opéra district, injuring her wrist and knocking her to the ground. Arrested shortly afterwards, the suspect put up a fierce struggle. Already known to the courts, he would have been sentenced to a ban from French territory.

In Germany, in the Saxon town of Chemnitz, a trial will take place on Thursday concerning the case of an Afghan national, 38, who in the autumn of 2025 killed his wife, the mother of four children who are now left without parents, Tag24 and Bild reported. According to court spokeswoman Marika Lang, the murder weapon was a butcher’s hat weighing 927.86 grams.  The police reported that the man struck his wife several times in the upper body and head. “The 38-year-old victim was eventually taken to hospital for further treatment, where she died as a result of her injuries,” the report states.

In the UK, at Winchester Crown Court, the trial is underway of 26-year-old Abdinasir Elmi, a Somali national who was staying at the Roundhouse Hotel in the seaside resort of Dorset, on charges of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl, according to Daily Echo. Prosecutor Oliver Hirsch told the jury that the complainant had spent the evening with friends in the town centre, but after her boyfriend and friends had left, she was trying to catch a bus home. The court heard that a friend’s mother had offered her a lift home, but this was not possible because there was no room in the car. The defendant then approached her and led her to nearby Bournemouth Gardens, where he assaulted her, Hirsch said.

“Whilst all this was going on, it would appear the defendant, Mr Elmi, had been watching her. CCTV footage from the town centre shows him standing around looking at the group of young people who were there and not really appearing to engage that much with them,” the prosecutor stated.

Hirsch said that the complainant later told police that “Mr Elmi came over to her when her friends had left and told her he would walk her to the bus stop. However, he took her past the bus stop, putting his arm around her, ensuring she would have to go with him. They went into the gardens together and sat on a bench,” adding that it was on that bench that the defendant allegedly sexually assaulted the woman before she managed to get away.

The prosecutor also added that the suspect, who was assisted by an interpreter during the hearing, had been spotted on CCTV footage taken earlier that evening, before approaching or looking at the two young women. The suspect denies the charges against him.

“The prosecution says that in all likelihood what happened was that Mr Elmi set out that night to have sex with a young woman and didn’t much mind whether she consented or not,” Hirsch concluded.

The smuggling of migrants has also been the subject of particular attention. Kaiwan Poore, 37, a British citizen of Iranian origin, was arrested in July 2025 by police at Manchester Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Turkey, according to Daily Express. He was later arrested by officers from the National Extradition Unit in France last July after French officials issued an arrest warrant on the day of his sentencing at the Regional Court in Lille.

He was eventually released on bail by a French court in November 2024 and went on the run before being sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a human trafficking gang described by prosecutors as the “Death Merchants.” During the trial, it emerged that he had been living in Coventry, where he helped fund the construction of a local mosque, although he claimed to be unemployed and receiving Universal Credit.

“He organised or participated in the organisation of migrant crossings to the UK, in particular by supplying life jackets and petrol, booking and paying for hotel rooms to accommodate smugglers or migrants, supervising or participating in departures, organising them in advance by participating in the transport of nautical equipment imported into France, and being present at the departure areas,” court documents stated.

Each crossing organised by the gang yielded them around £83,000 in net profit. Poor was one of 18 members of the criminal network convicted following the trial in Lille.

In the meantime, Danny Tommo, a British anti-immigration activist, was arrested on suspicion of “aggravated trespass” and disrupting activity in Dover for showing his opposition to boats arriving in the UK. “Yesterday I was arrested. Late last night they released me. But straight away I can see what they’re doing trying to shut down any voice that dares push back against the invasion of Britain,” he said on his X page.
