General Grynkewich appointed new NATO Supreme commander

General Alexus G. Grynkewich of the United States Air Force has taken command of NATO’s Allied Command Operations. The handover ceremony was held on 4 July 2025 at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium. He succeeds General Chris Cavoli of the US Army, who had served in the role since 2022.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised General Cavoli’s leadership and service. He noted Cavoli’s response to the war in Ukraine and his work to strengthen NATO’s presence in the Baltic Sea. This included protecting undersea infrastructure and launching a new NATO command in Germany to support Ukraine. “You have been an outstanding SACEUR, leading with honour and integrity,” said Mr Rutte.

The Secretary General also welcomed General Grynkewich to the position. He highlighted Grynkewich’s extensive military experience and former role as a fighter pilot. This background gives him insight into both air threats and broader security challenges. He also served as Director of Operations for the US Joint Staff, overseeing global military priorities. Mr Rutte expressed full confidence in his leadership. “I know NATO can count on you to serve with the same steadfast resolve,” he said.

Allied Command Operations is responsible for planning and carrying out NATO missions. General Grynkewich is the twenty-first officer to serve as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. The first was General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who later became President of the United States.
