A general strike organised by Greece’s largest public sector workers’ union (ADEDY) drew widespread participation on Tuesday.
Both public and private sector workers, including journalists, took part in the 24-hour strike in support of workers in special health programmes.
Several other trade unions as well as left-wing political parties and organisations also supported the strike. Rallies in support of the strike were planned in cities across the country.
Meanwhile, the Attica Taxi Workers’ Union (SATA), the main representative body of taxi drivers in the Attica region, which includes Athens and the port city of Piraeus, called for a strike on February 19.
The Lavrio Workers’ Centre organised a protest at the local port on Saturday, blocking the movement of 18 trucks that were transporting 350 tonnes of TNT equivalent explosives to the EAS (Hellenic Defence Systems) plant.
Representatives of the centre expressed outrage that such a dangerous cargo was being moved through city streets and residential areas without adequate security and safety measures, putting residents at serious risk.
The explosives are reportedly intended for storage in the open area of the factory, where they will be used to produce 155 mm ammunition to be supplied to Ukraine. The production of these projectiles is carried out by the EAS plant in co-operation with a Czech company.
