Georgia’s State Security Service accused Kyiv of coup preparations

Representatives of left-wing Georgian parties in the European Parliament condemned attempts to drag the country into the Ukrainian conflict amid accusations that Ukraine was helping to prepare a state coup in Georgia.

At the end of September, Brussels hosted an evening of Georgian culture, which was attended by a delegation of Georgian Left Platforms, Mick Wallace, Clare Daly, a delegation of the Communist Party of Ireland and representatives of the Russian Embassy in Belgium.

A representative of the Socialist Georgia Platform, Ilia Lobzhanidze, held a meeting with representatives of the Labour Party of Belgium. The agenda was the war in Ukraine and the EU and Kyiv’s attempt to involve Georgia in the conflict.

Lobzhanidze stated that Georgia’s involvement in a military conflict would be detrimental to the overall situation. He also refuted false information that the population of Georgia supported confrontation with Russia.

A day later, the delegation of Georgian left-wing organisations held a hearing, attended by 10 MEPs, European Parliament media and representatives of various European organisations.

Georgian authorities are concerned that the destabilisation attempt could succeed amid a dire social situation and minimised public support for the ruling Georgian Dream Party.

The European Socialists Party as well as the Institute for Fair Economy believe that Georgia’s obtaining the status of an EU candidate will prevent disturbances. The meeting took place against the backdrop of accusations by the Georgian State Security Service that Kyiv was assisting in the preparation of a state coup in Georgia.

The Socialist Georgia Platform highlighted the pressure from the EU and Kyiv on Georgia to join the anti-Russian coalition and open the “second front” against Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia.
