German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Friday called Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator. She also stressed that the German government supported Ukraine, according to Politico.
The Foreign Minister said:
“If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president?”
Baerbock told in an interview with Fox News on Friday when asked how the government in Berlin saw the end of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine:
“We will support Ukraine as long as it takes.”
“If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president? Therefore, Ukraine has to win this war,” Baerbock said in the interview during her trip to the U.S.
Baerbock’s comments come amid developing trade tensions between Beijing and Brussels, after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted this week that the EU executive would launch an investigation into Chinese subsidies for electric cars.
Baerbock’s Green Party is leaning towards a tougher approach to Beijing, despite Germany’s ambivalent attitude towards China.
US President Joe Biden last year also called Xi a dictator when referring to the Chinese spy balloon that the US shot down earlier this year.
