German parliament votes against supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine

German lawmakers voted in favour of the proposal advanced by the country’s ruling coalition, which calls for providing Ukraine with “additional, necessary long-range weapons systems and ammunition,” but did not mention the delivery of the Taurus cruise missile system.

382 lawmakers voted in favour of the proposal, 284 opposed and 2 abstained. However, there is disagreement among the parties in the ruling coalition over whether the wording also allows for the delivery of Taurus missiles.

Politicians from the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens argue that the formulation contains the supply of Taurus, whereas the Social Democratic Party (SPD) rejects such an interpretation.

The vote came after parliamentarians earlier in the day rejected another competing proposal submitted by the opposition Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc, in which they openly called for the delivery of the Taurus cruise missile system to Kyiv.

The FDP head of the Bundestag Defence Committee Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann voted in favour of the opposition proposal, highlighting the divisions within Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition.
