German politician says arms transfers to be restricted at constitutional level

German politician from Thuringia speaks in favour of halting arms transfers to other countries.

Thuringia’s prime minister, Bodo Ramelow, told an interview with the Catholic News Agency (KNA) in Erfurt on Friday that arms shipments from Germany should stop at the constitutional level.

He said: “We live in times when the Spiral of militarism, chauvinism and imperialism is spinning faster and faster and is being felt everywhere.”

According to him, in violent conflicts the state has the right to self-defence, but there are many reasons why “everything military can only be responded to militarily.”

Germany is the world’s second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine, having so far allocated 14. 5 billion euros, according to the Kiel Institute. Earlier on Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Europe to increase military aid to Ukraine, especially air defence systems, as Kyiv is struggling to repel a Russian offensive in the northeast.
